CUBA: FIDAL CASTRO'S DAUGHTER SAYS WORLD IS BEGINNING TO WAKE UP
(AGI) - Rome, Italy 8 July. - Fidel Castro's daughter Alina Fernandez Reveulta has spoken out against her father, condemning the cruelty and inhumanity of his regime. "I Think that the last wave of repression against the Cuban dissidents is an example of the reality of Fidel Castro's regime. The United States and the European Union should now take a firm stance in the defence of human rights now that it is clear that they are been violated in Cuba," she stated. Mrs. Fernandez Reveulta is an active member of the ‘Anticastrism’ movement which recently came before the NGO 'Judicial Watch' and the Foreign commission for Human Rights of the lower house of commons, chaired by Gennaro Malgieri. Mrs Fernandez has also urged the European Union to place more pressure on the regime so that it releases its dissidents who "have been forced to live in solitary confinement in sometimes awful conditions." A testimony by Blanca Gonzalez was particularly hard hitting as she explained how her son had been given a 25 year sentence and had undergone various kinds of abuse. She called upon the Italian authorities to do everything in their capabilities to ensure that her son was released. She also said that she was only allowed to see her son once every 3 months, and then only for two hours. The President of the Committee for human rights Mr. Malgieri assured that it would do everything possible to support the requests put forward by the dissidents and underlined how Cuba was alone in its responsibility for the suffering felt by its people. "I believe that Europe will make its voice heard," said Malgieri. Previously the Cuban delegation had met with the President of the Foreign Commission Gustavo Selva to whom they illustrated the moves that they were taking to ensure that democratic freedom was recognized on the island. Mr. Selva recalled that he had repeatedly denounced the repressive nature of the Cuban regime and the violence committed against the opposition. Selva assured that he would meet with the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, explaining that it was part of a series of meetings in which he would also meet with the American President George W Bush, planned for the 20 and 21 of this month in Texas.
